NOT ALL BABY BARRIER CREAMS FEEL THE SAME

Why Parents Choose BUM + BODY for Everyday Barrier Care

A baby barrier cream has one very practical job: putting a protective layer between delicate skin and the moisture, mess and rubbing inside a nappy.

BUM + BODY Balm combines grass-fed tallow, beeswax and zinc oxide to create that barrier without the thick, chalky texture of a traditional white paste. Calendula, rosehip and panthenol help keep the skin beneath it feeling soft, moisturised and comfortable.

The balm is rich enough to stay in place, but melts between warm fingertips so it spreads without dragging. It contains no petroleum or synthetic fragrance and is safety assessed, UK-compliant and made in small batches.

Protective like a barrier cream. Soft and comfortable like a balm.

“I love this product. It was recommended to me, and I don’t regret buying it at all. My baby had a nappy rash, and it cleared up in no time, so it’s definitely effective. Not to mention, the ingredients are very well put together, everything has a purpose, with no unnecessary additives.”

What a Good Baby Barrier Cream Should Do

Protect from moisture. Reduce friction. Stay comfortable on the skin.

A barrier cream helps shield the nappy area from prolonged contact with wee, poo and moisture, while reducing the rubbing that comes with nappies, wiping and constant movement.

It can be especially useful before bedtime, during teething or looser stools, before a longer journey, or whenever your baby’s skin tends to become red after spending longer in a nappy.

The aim is not to cover the bottom in the thickest possible layer. BUM + BODY Balm is concentrated, so a thin coating is enough to form a barrier that stays in place. Applying more mostly creates a greasier baby and a slightly more athletic nappy change.

Most barrier creams do their best work when nothing dramatic happens. The skin stays comfortable, the nappy change ends and nobody gives the cream any credit whatsoever. We can live with that.

Unlike many modern creams that rely on synthetic fillers, Matylda Baby uses natural ingredients like organic grass-fed beef tallow, beeswax, and calendula extract, which have been used for generations as safe, gentle remedies for dry, sensitive, or irritated skin. BUM + BODY Balm helps create a soft moisture barrier while soothing the feel of irritated skin and supporting the skin’s natural barrier function. Many parents tell us they see a dramatic difference overnight, especially when they apply it generously before bed.

Barrier Cream Ingredients for Baby Skin

BUM + BODY Balm begins with grass-fed beef tallow, which gives it its rich, moisturising texture. Beeswax helps the balm stay in place, while zinc oxide supports the barrier between the skin and moisture.

Calendula, rosehip and panthenol help care for skin that is easily dried or irritated, and chamomile completes the formula with a subtle natural scent.

There is no petroleum, mineral oil, synthetic fragrance or long list of filler ingredients. Just a concentrated formula in which every ingredient has a clear job.

Matylda Baby founders behind a baby barrier cream made by mums for delicate skin

MADE BY MUMS

WHY WE CREATED MATYLDA BABY

Matylda Baby started because my daughter Matylda’s skin was red, sore and getting nowhere with the growing collection of products beside the changing mat.

Emma, my best friend and a natural cosmetics expert, and I wanted something that could protect vulnerable skin without feeling chalky, drying or unpleasant to apply.

We made batch after batch until we had a rich balm that stayed on the skin, spread without tugging and genuinely helped Matylda’s skin heal. That result is why we kept making it — first for ourselves, then for other mums.

A Soft Balm That Melts Into Skin

Many baby barrier creams are thick, white and surprisingly determined to remain on both the baby and the person changing them.

BUM + BODY Balm is firm in the tin, then melts between warm fingertips into a smooth, oil-like layer that glides gently over the skin.

It feels rich and protective without becoming a heavy paste. Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin and let the formula do its job. You do not need to plaster it on.

A little truly goes a long way.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a baby barrier cream?

A baby barrier cream creates a protective layer between delicate nappy skin and moisture, wee, poo and friction.

Its main role is preventative. The layer helps reduce prolonged contact with the things inside a nappy that can leave the skin looking red and uncomfortable.

BUM + BODY Balm performs the same protective job in a richer balm texture. It melts between warm fingertips and spreads in a thin, soft layer rather than sitting on the skin as a thick white paste.

When Should I Use Baby Barrier Cream?

Use a barrier cream when your baby’s nappy skin needs extra protection from moisture or rubbing.

Common times include:

  • Before bedtime or a long nap
  • During teething or looser stools
  • Before a longer car journey
  • When the weather is hot
  • When your baby is prone to redness
  • During routine changes when the skin needs a little extra support

You do not need to wait until the skin looks sore. Barrier care is often most useful before irritation begins.

Can I Use BUM + BODY Balm at Every Nappy Change?

Yes, BUM + BODY Balm can be used regularly as directed, but not every baby needs barrier cream at every change.

If the skin is comfortable and rarely becomes red, you may only need it before bedtime, travel or other longer stretches in a nappy. If your baby is more prone to irritation, you may choose to use a thin layer more often.

The important word is thin. BUM + BODY Balm is concentrated, so you do not need to coat the skin heavily.

What Is the Difference Between Baby Barrier Cream and Nappy Rash Cream?

Barrier cream is used before the skin becomes sore or when it tends to redden easily. It helps shield the skin from moisture and rubbing during everyday nappy wear.

If the bottom is already red and uncomfortable, choose care intended for an active rash.

There can be some overlap in how a balm moisturises and protects, but the reason for using it is different: everyday prevention or care for soreness that is already present.

Should I use baby barrier cream at every nappy change?

You do not always need to use baby barrier cream at every nappy change if your baby’s skin is happy, clear and not prone to irritation. But if your baby gets red easily, has teething poos, diarrhoea, friction marks, sensitive skin or recurring nappy rash, regular barrier support can be helpful.

Use a thin layer on clean, dry skin, especially before longer stretches such as naps, bedtime or travel. With BUM + BODY Balm, a little goes a long way, so you do not need to coat the skin thickly.

If your baby has a diagnosed rash, infection or prescribed treatment, follow your GP or pharmacist’s advice on when to apply a barrier product alongside any medicine.

How Much Barrier Cream Should I Apply?

Apply a thin, even layer over clean, dry skin.

For a small area, begin with roughly enough balm to coat the tip of one clean finger. Warm it between your fingertips, then spread it gently without rubbing hard.

You should be able to see and feel a light barrier, but the skin does not need to disappear beneath the product. Using twice as much does not create twice the protection.

Should I Remove All the Barrier Cream at Every Nappy Change?

No. You do not need to scrub away every trace of barrier cream if a clean layer remains.

Remove any soiled product gently, clean the skin as needed and pat it dry. You can then top up the barrier with a small amount of fresh balm.

Aggressive wiping creates more friction, which rather defeats the point of using a barrier product in the first place.

Does Baby Barrier Cream Need to Be Thick?

No. A barrier cream needs to shield the skin, but that does not mean the thickest visible coating is automatically the best.

BUM + BODY Balm is waterless and concentrated. It melts into a thin layer that stays in place without becoming a chalky paste.

Start with less than you think you need. You can always add a touch more to areas particularly exposed to moisture or rubbing.

Can Newborns Use BUM + BODY Balm?

BUM + BODY Balm is made for delicate baby skin and can be used from birth as directed.

Apply a very small amount to clean, dry skin and patch test first, particularly if your baby’s skin is highly reactive.

Avoid the eyes, mouth and broken or infected-looking skin. Stop using the product if irritation appears and ask your health visitor, pharmacist or GP for advice if the skin is worsening or causing concern.

Can I Use BUM + BODY Balm on My Baby’s Face or Dribble-Prone Chin?

Yes. Use a tiny amount on areas such as weather-exposed cheeks or a dribble-prone chin, avoiding the eyes and mouth.

Patch test first and apply the balm in a very thin layer. It is rich, so only a small amount is needed.

If dry, rough or flaky skin is the main concern, explore our balm for dry baby skin.

Can Barrier Cream Be Used on Eczema-Prone Skin?

BUM + BODY Balm can moisturise dry, eczema-prone skin and give vulnerable areas extra protection.

It is not a medicine or eczema treatment and should not be applied to broken, bleeding, weeping or infected-looking skin without professional advice.

If eczema is the main concern, explore our balm for eczema-prone baby skin.

What Should I Do If Redness or Soreness Is Already Present?

Keep the area clean and dry, change nappies regularly and avoid unnecessary rubbing.

For ordinary redness or soreness, choose care intended for an active rash rather than relying on preventative barrier care alone.

If the skin is spreading, blistered, bleeding, weeping, infected-looking, unusually painful or not improving, seek advice from your pharmacist, health visitor or GP. Our guidance on severe or persistent nappy rash explains the signs that need closer attention and when to seek medical advice.
