Why This Nappy Rash Balm Is Different

SOFT PROTECTION WITHOUT DRAGGING

When parents look for nappy rash cream, they usually do not want another tub that simply sits on top of the problem. They want something soft enough to apply to sore-looking skin and protective enough to stop the nappy making matters worse.

BUM + BODY Balm combines grass-fed tallow, beeswax and zinc oxide with calendula, rosehip, panthenol and chamomile. Together, they moisturise and soften the skin, calm the look of redness and form a light barrier against further dampness and rubbing.

The balm is rich and concentrated, but melts quickly between warm fingertips. That means you can press on a thin layer rather than dragging a thick, chalky paste across a bottom that is already having a fairly bad day.

It contains no petroleum or synthetic fragrance, is safety assessed and is made in small batches in the UK.

More than a barrier: a complete balm for skin that already looks uncomfortable.

“I love this product. It was recommended to me, and I don’t regret buying it at all. My baby had a nappy rash, and it cleared up in no time, so it’s definitely effective. Not to mention, the ingredients are very well put together, everything has a purpose, with no unnecessary additives.”

What BUM + BODY Does When the Rash Is Already Here

A good nappy rash cream needs to protect the skin from further contact with moisture and rubbing. But once the skin is visibly irritated, it also needs proper moisturising and support while it settles.

BUM + BODY Balm forms a soft coating over the affected area. Tallow, calendula, rosehip and panthenol help keep the skin moisturised and comfortable, while zinc oxide and beeswax help the balm stay in place inside the damp, high-friction environment of a nappy.

BUM + BODY shields irritated skin from further moisture and rubbing, moisturises and softens the affected area, calms the look of redness, supports the skin barrier while it repairs, and melts on without tugging or scraping.

The balm does not need to be applied thickly. A thin layer is enough, which is useful when the person wearing it has already attempted to roll off the changing mat three times.

Unlike many modern creams that rely on synthetic fillers, Matylda Baby uses natural ingredients like organic grass-fed beef tallow, beeswax, and calendula extract, which have been used for generations as safe, gentle remedies for dry, sensitive, or irritated skin. Recent studies on fatty acid composition in tallow confirm what our grandmothers already knew: nature provides everything a baby’s skin needs to stay soft, calm, and healthy.

MORE THAN A ZINC PASTE

Carefully Chosen Ingredients for Irritated Nappy Skin

BUM + BODY Balm begins with grass-fed beef tallow, which gives it a rich, moisturising base that softens skin and helps hold moisture in.

Beeswax and zinc oxide help form the coating that shields the nappy area from further dampness and rubbing. Calendula, rosehip, panthenol and chamomile help moisturise, nourish and soothe the irritated skin underneath, while a tiny amount of ylang ylang gives the balm its light botanical scent.

Every ingredient has a proper job. Grass-fed beef tallow creates the rich, moisturising base, while beeswax helps the balm stay on the skin and zinc oxide adds protection from moisture. Calendula helps soothe and calm the look of irritation, rosehip oil nourishes and softens, and panthenol moisturises and conditions the skin. Chamomile adds further soothing support for sensitive-feeling skin.

MADE BY MUMS

WHY WE CREATED MATYLDA BABY

Matylda Baby started because my daughter Matylda’s skin was red, sore and getting nowhere with the growing collection of creams beside the changing mat.

Emma, my best friend and a natural cosmetics expert, and I wanted something that did more than create a thick white coating. We wanted a balm that would protect Matylda’s bottom, moisturise the struggling skin underneath and feel soft enough to apply without rubbing.

We made batch after batch until we had a formula that genuinely helped Matylda’s skin heal. That result is why we kept making it—first for ourselves, then for other mums staring at their own collection of half-used nappy creams.

A Soft Balm That Melts Into Skin

When a little bottom is already sore, the last thing it needs is a paste that requires scraping, wrestling and the upper-body strength of a small builder.

BUM + BODY Balm is firm in the tin, then melts almost immediately between warm fingertips. It turns into a smooth, oil-like texture that can be pressed or gently smoothed over the affected area without dragging.

The finish is rich and protective rather than chalky or gritty. Start with a small amount and add more only where needed.

A little truly goes a long way.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Nappy Rash Cream?

Nappy rash cream is used when the skin under the nappy is already red, sore-looking or irritated.

It helps protect the area from further contact with moisture, wee, poo and rubbing while keeping the skin moisturised and supported as it repairs.

BUM + BODY has a soft balm texture rather than a thick white paste. It melts between warm fingertips and can be pressed gently onto the skin without unnecessary dragging.

What Makes BUM + BODY Suitable for Irritated Nappy Skin?

BUM + BODY combines several types of support in one formula.

Tallow and rosehip oil moisturise and soften. Beeswax and zinc oxide help shield the skin from further moisture and rubbing. Calendula, panthenol and chamomile help care for skin that looks red or feels uncomfortable.

The balm is waterless, concentrated and designed to be used in a thin layer. It contains no petroleum or synthetic fragrance and is safety assessed and compliant with UK Cosmetic Product Regulations.

What Is the Difference Between Nappy Rash Cream and Baby Barrier Cream?

Use barrier cream before the skin becomes sore or when it tends to redden easily.

Once the bottom is already red and uncomfortable, choose care made to moisturise, soothe and protect it while it settles.

Some balms can offer both kinds of protection, but what the skin needs at that moment should guide how you use them.

How Much Nappy Rash Balm Should I Apply?

Apply a thin, even layer over clean, dry skin.

Begin with roughly enough balm to coat the tip of one clean finger for a small area. Warm it between your fingertips before gently pressing or smoothing it onto the skin.

The skin should have a light coating, but it does not need to disappear beneath the balm. Using more does not automatically make it work faster.

Should I Use BUM + BODY at Every Nappy Change?

You can reapply BUM + BODY as needed while the skin is irritated.

At each change, remove any soiled balm gently, clean the area and pat it dry. Apply a fresh thin layer where the skin still needs protection.

Once the skin looks comfortable again, you may choose to use it less often or switch to routine preventative care during longer naps, overnight or other times when irritation is more likely.

Should I Remove All the Balm at Every Change?

No. You do not need to scrub away every trace of clean balm.

Remove anything soiled, clean the skin gently and leave any clean coating that is still in place. Add a small amount of fresh balm where necessary.

Hard rubbing creates more friction and can make the skin even less impressed with the entire nappy-changing arrangement.

Can I Use BUM + BODY Overnight?

Yes. Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin before the overnight nappy.

The balm is rich and waterless, so it stays in place and helps shield the skin during a longer stretch in the nappy.

Change the nappy sooner if it becomes heavily soiled, particularly during diarrhoea or frequent loose stools.

Can BUM + BODY Balm Be Used From Birth?

BUM + BODY is made with grass-fed beef tallow, beeswax, zinc oxide, calendula, rosehip oil, panthenol and chamomile. Each ingredient has a clear purpose, and the finished balm has been properly safety assessed and is compliant with UK cosmetic regulations.

There is no petroleum, mineral oil or synthetic fragrance in the formula.

For us, “natural” only means something when the ingredients have been chosen to do a proper job.

What Makes This a Natural Nappy Rash Cream?

In some cases, yes. If a cream is too thick, heavily fragranced or not suited to sensitive skin, it can feel uncomfortable or trap irritation.

Some products focus only on creating a barrier, which may not help if the skin is already inflamed.

If the rash seems to worsen, it can be worth switching to a simpler, more balanced formula that supports the skin rather than overwhelming it.

Gentle, well-formulated balms are often better tolerated by reactive skin.

Does BUM + BODY Contain Zinc Oxide?

Yes. We use zinc oxide alongside tallow, beeswax, calendula, rosehip and panthenol.

It helps create separation between the skin and the damp, irritating environment inside a nappy. We use it as part of the wider formula rather than relying on a dry, zinc-heavy paste alone.

What Is the Difference Between BUM + BODY and ANGRY BITS?

BUM + BODY is our everyday formula for visible redness, soreness and regular family use.

ANGRY BITS is our more intensive balm for stubborn, angry-looking areas of closed skin when BUM + BODY does not feel like quite enough. It contains tamanu oil and should not be used where there is a known sensitivity or allergy to tamanu or related nuts.

If the rash is stubborn or very angry-looking but the skin remains closed, read our guidance on severe or persistent nappy rash.

What Should I Do If the Rash Looks Severe or Is Not Improving?

Speak to your pharmacist, health visitor or GP if the skin is broken, bleeding, weeping, blistered, spreading, infected-looking or unusually painful, or if your baby seems unwell.

You should also seek advice if the rash is not improving despite regular changes and appropriate care.

Our guide to when to worry about nappy rash explains the warning signs and when professional advice is the right next step.

Still Deciding Between a Cream, Balm or Ointment?

Our guide helps you compare nappy rash creams and understand the differences between creams, balms and ointments.

Choose BUM + BODY when the bottom is already red or uncomfortable, the skin is not broken, bleeding or weeping, and there are no signs of infection.
