The word “tallow” on a label does not automatically make the product good skincare.
Look for clear sourcing, cosmetic-grade tallow, careful rendering, useful supporting ingredients and confirmation that the finished balm has been safety assessed. Texture matters too. A balm can contain excellent tallow and still be unpleasantly heavy, strongly fragranced or difficult to spread.
Plain whipped tallow can moisturise, but it offers little beyond the fat itself. A well-made balm combines tallow with ingredients that make it more protective, easier to apply and more useful day to day. That matters when you are using it on dry hands, weather-battered cheeks or a small person who has no intention of sitting still for a ten-step skincare routine.

Matylda Baby started because my daughter Matylda’s skin was red, sore and getting nowhere with the growing collection of creams beside the changing mat.
Emma, my best friend and a natural cosmetics expert, and I set out to make something richer, more protective and genuinely useful for struggling skin. Tallow became the heart of it because it created the kind of deeply moisturising base that Matylda’s skin needed.
One of the biggest concerns people have about beef tallow balm is the texture. Many imagine something heavy, oily or waxy enough to weatherproof a shed. Ours is rich and concentrated, but it is not that.

Plenty of products contain tallow. We wanted to make one that did considerably more than put rendered fat into a pretty tin.
Is pure tallow better than a properly formulated tallow balm?
Not necessarily. “Pure” tells you that a product contains only tallow, but it does not automatically mean it will be the best option for your skin.
Plain tallow can be moisturising, but a complete balm can combine it with ingredients that improve spreadability, protection and overall skin feel. Calendula, panthenol, zinc oxide and rosehip are not there to dilute our tallow. They are there because each one contributes something useful.
The best choice depends on what you want the product to do, not simply how short the label is.
Is Matylda’s beef tallow grass-fed and organic?
Yes. We use organic, grass-fed beef tallow sourced from Dorset and prepared as a cosmetic-grade ingredient.
Cosmetic grade matters because the tallow has been produced for use in skincare rather than taken from a cooking supply and repurposed at home. It gives us greater consistency and traceability and allows us to make a balm that meets UK cosmetic safety requirements.

Is beef tallow balm suitable for sensitive or eczema-prone skin?
A rich tallow balm can be a good moisturising option for dry, sensitive or eczema-prone skin. The fatty base softens rough areas, supports the skin barrier and helps reduce the dry, tight feeling that comes with moisture loss.
BUM + BODY Balm was created with easily irritated family skin in mind. It is not a medical treatment for eczema, but it moisturises, protects and helps dry, angry-looking areas feel calmer and more comfortable.
Tallow balm is richer than a water-based cream, so it would be dishonest to describe it as weightless. How it feels depends partly on how much you use.
Warm a small amount between your fingertips and apply it in a thin layer. BUM + BODY Balm melts into an oil and spreads easily, leaving skin soft and protected rather than covered in a thick paste.
Using too much will naturally feel heavier. With tallow, starting small is almost always the better plan.
Can I use Matylda’s tallow balm on my face and body?
Yes. BUM + BODY Balm can be used sparingly on dry facial areas, hands, elbows, knees and other patches that need richer moisturising and protection.
Begin with a small amount, warm it between your fingers and apply a thin layer. If your facial skin is oily or easily irritated, patch test first and see how it responds.
It was made for babies first, but mums have a habit of quietly adopting it for themselves.
Is Matylda’s tallow balm suitable for babies?
BUM + BODY Balm was formulated with baby skin in mind and can be used from birth as directed. As with any new skincare product, patch test it first, particularly if the skin is very reactive.
A properly prepared cosmetic tallow balm should not smell like Sunday lunch.
The scent comes from the quality of the tallow and the other ingredients in the balm. BUM + BODY has a light botanical scent rather than a strong beefy smell or heavy synthetic fragrance.
As with any product made with natural ingredients, the scent can vary very slightly between small batches.
What’s the difference between tallow balm and cream?
A balm is oil-based and contains no added water. That makes it rich, concentrated and particularly useful when skin needs a protective layer that helps hold moisture in.
A cream combines water and oil, so it normally feels lighter and absorbs more quickly on the surface. Because it contains water, it also requires emulsifiers and an appropriate preservation system.
