When you are looking for a tallow baby balm, you are probably not looking for any old jar of rendered fat. You want to know where the tallow came from, that the formula was made for delicate baby skin and that the finished balm has been properly safety assessed.
BUM + BODY Balm starts with cosmetic-grade, grass-fed Dorset beef tallow. We combine it with calendula, rosehip, beeswax, zinc oxide, panthenol and chamomile to soften dry skin and leave vulnerable areas with a protective layer.
It is a finished baby cosmetic, not cooking tallow, an adult face balm or a homemade mixture whose shelf life involves a certain amount of optimism.
“Honestly, we’re a big fan! Considering we’ve been through many creams, been referred to a dermatologist, this is the cream that has helped her neck the most!”
Tallow gives BUM + BODY its rich texture, helping the balm soften skin, hold moisture in and leave vulnerable areas with a light protective layer.
But tallow is only one part of the formula. We use it alongside calendula, rosehip, beeswax, zinc oxide, panthenol and chamomile because delicate skin often needs more than a single ingredient in a jar.
BUM + BODY Balm is richer than a water-based lotion and designed to be used in a thin layer. It is particularly useful when ordinary lotion feels too light or seems to disappear before you have even put the lid back on.
The key is formulation. This isn’t kitchen tallow or a generic adult balm. We use grass-fed beef tallow alongside calendula, rosehip, beeswax, zinc oxide, panthenol and chamomile to create a natural tallow balm for babies that feels purposeful, gentle and easy to use every day. Rich, simple care for parents who want the benefits of tallow without the guesswork.

MADE BY MUMS
Why We Made This Balm
Matylda Baby started because my daughter Matylda’s skin was red, sore and getting nowhere with the growing collection of products beside the changing mat.
Emma, my best friend and a natural cosmetics expert, and I wanted to make something rich enough to protect struggling skin, but straightforward enough that we would happily use it on our own babies.
Tallow became the heart of the balm because it created the deeply moisturising, protective base Matylda’s skin needed. The difference we saw is why we kept making it — first for ourselves, then for other mums.
Wondering whether tallow balm for babies will feel heavy, greasy or slightly strange? BUM + BODY Balm is firm in the tin, then melts between warm fingertips into a smooth, oil-like texture that spreads easily without dragging at delicate skin.
Apply a thin layer wherever the skin needs something richer and more protective than lotion.
It leaves skin feeling soft, comfortable and properly moisturised rather than chalky or sticky. Start with less than you think you need.
A little truly goes a long way, which is useful because babies are not famous for waiting patiently while you measure skincare.
step 1
warm
Scoop out a small amount and warm it between clean fingertips. The balm will soften and melt almost immediately.
step 2
gently apply
Smooth onto clean, dry skin. On very dry or sore-looking areas, press it in gently rather than rubbing or tugging.
step 3
keep it clean
Using it on bums, cheeks and everything in between? Wash your hands before dipping back in to keep the balm fresh.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a tallow baby balm, and how is it different from baby lotion?
A tallow baby balm is a rich, oil-based balm made with beef tallow as one of its main ingredients.
Baby lotion is generally water-based, lighter and designed to spread quickly over larger areas. A tallow balm contains no added water, so it is richer, more concentrated and usually applied to smaller areas that need extra moisturising or protection.
They simply do different jobs. Lotion works well for light, all-over moisturising. A balm is more useful when a smaller area needs richer protection that stays in place.
BUM + BODY combines tallow with calendula, rosehip, beeswax, zinc oxide, panthenol and chamomile. It melts between warm fingertips, so only a small amount is needed.
What makes BUM + BODY Balm suitable for baby skin?
BUM + BODY Balm is a finished cosmetic product created specifically for delicate baby skin.
It is made with cosmetic-grade, grass-fed Dorset beef tallow and carefully chosen supporting ingredients. The balm is safety assessed, compliant with UK Cosmetic Product Regulations and designed to be used in a thin layer on dry or vulnerable areas.
As with any new skincare product, patch test a small area first and stop using it if irritation occurs. Avoid the eyes, mouth and broken or infected-looking skin.
How is a baby tallow balm different from plain or homemade tallow?
Plain or homemade tallow contains only the rendered fat, and its sourcing, consistency and texture can vary.
BUM + BODY is a finished cosmetic formula made with cosmetic-grade tallow and supporting ingredients, then safety assessed for sale in the UK.
We have nothing against making things at home. But when the customer is likely to lick her own sleeve, we prefer slightly less guesswork.
Where can I use BUM + BODY Balm?
Use a small amount on:
Dry cheeks
Dribble-prone chins
Little folds
Rough knees and elbows
Dry body patches
Weather-exposed skin
The nappy area
Warm the balm between clean fingers first and apply it in a thin layer.
For broken, bleeding, weeping, infected-looking or rapidly worsening skin, speak to your GP, pharmacist or health visitor rather than applying a new cosmetic product.
Can I use BUM + BODY Balm in the nappy area?
Yes. Apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin to give the nappy area extra protection from moisture and friction.
BUM + BODY contains tallow, beeswax and zinc oxide, giving it a richer and more protective feel than ordinary lotion.
Change nappies regularly and clean the area gently. If a rash is severe, painful, blistered, bleeding, weeping or not improving, seek advice from your GP, pharmacist or health visitor.

Is BUM + BODY Balm suitable for eczema-prone skin?
BUM + BODY Balm can be used to moisturise dry, eczema-prone skin and support the skin barrier. It helps rough or angry-looking areas feel softer, calmer and more comfortable.
It is not a medicine or eczema treatment. Avoid applying it to broken, infected, bleeding or weeping skin unless advised by a healthcare professional.
Tallow balm is richer than a water-based lotion, so it would be misleading to call it weightless. How it feels depends largely on how much you use.
Warm a small amount between clean fingertips and apply it in a thin layer. The balm melts into a smooth oil and spreads easily over the skin.
Apply too much and it will naturally feel oilier. Start small, give it a moment to settle and add a little more only where needed.
Will tallow balm make my baby smell like beef?
No, BUM + BODY Balm should not make your baby smell like cooking fat.
It has a light botanical scent from the ingredients in the formula, including chamomile and a small amount of ylang ylang.
The scent is soft rather than heavily perfumed, although it can vary very slightly between small batches because the balm is made with natural ingredients.
How much tallow baby balm should I use?
Begin with a very small amount, roughly enough to coat the tip of a clean finger for one small patch.
Warm it between your fingertips, then spread or press it gently over the skin. You should be able to create a thin layer without leaving a thick coating.
Because BUM + BODY contains no added water, it is much more concentrated than ordinary lotion. Using more does not necessarily make it work better; it mostly makes the baby slipperier.
Can I use BUM + BODY Balm on my baby’s face?
Yes. Use a tiny amount on dry cheeks, dribble-prone chins or small facial patches, avoiding the eyes, mouth and any broken, infected or weeping areas.
Warm the balm between clean fingertips and apply a very thin layer. Patch test first, particularly if your baby’s skin is highly reactive.
For persistent facial rashes, spreading redness or anything that concerns you, ask your GP, pharmacist or health visitor for advice.
Rich, concentrated and made specifically for little skin that needs more than a light lotion.
No kitchen rendering. No DIY guesswork. Just a finished baby balm made with cosmetic-grade, grass-fed tallow and a short list of hardworking ingredients.
